Watch The Panama Deception Video The Panama Deception

Years before the US went after Saddam Hussein, the White House had Manuel Noriega, another former ally, in its sights. In their Oscar-winning documentary, director Barbara Trent and writer/editor David Kasper (Cover Up: Behind the Iran Contra Affair) contrast media coverage of the 1989 invasion with expert testimony. The filmmakers backtrack to America's turn-of-the-century takeover of the Panama Canal--and volatile aftermath--before flashing forward to the reform-minded Carter era. When the CIA-supported Noriega comes to power, reform gives way to repression, and Reagan calls for the dictator's ouster. His successor, Bush, brings in the troops. It would be one thing if they only targeted military facilities, but witnesses claim soldiers also fired on civilians and residential property (a Pentagon spokesman denies the accusation). Depending on the source, casualties ranged from 250 to 4000.Fair Use: "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Canada and Panama took to the field for their final Group C match at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Panama was looking to take first place in the group and secure their spot in the quarter-finals. Panama's goalkeeper Luis Mejia did a good job keeping his team in the game in the first half. Mejia made a fine stop to thwart Julian De Guzman in the 28th minute. Canada's effort paid off in the second half. New York Red Bulls midfielder Dwayne De Rosario was brought down in the area. De Rosario picked himself up and then sent Mejia the wrong way in converting the penalty and Canada led 1-0 in the 62nd minute. Panama upped their tempo, but Canada keeper Milan Borjan was able to swat away Luis Renteria's shot seven minuters later. Panama couldn't break through and Canada could advance to the quarters if the score held. But then there was a frantic scramble in front of the Canadian goal - Gabriel Gomez blocked a shot but the ball fell for substitute Luis Tejada and he got the final touch to score a dramatic equalizer. 1-1 is how it would end, securing Panama top spot in Group C and a quarter-final match-up with El Salvador on Sunday. Canada had to wait to see the result between Guadeloupe and the United States. USA beat Guadeloupe, into last 8 A win or draw against Guadeloupe for the US and they would go to the the quarters while Canada would be knocked out. Fourth minute into the match, Guadeloupe's Stephane Zubar hits crossbar. The US would then pick up the pace, Jozy Altidore picked ...

(c)1988 CBS Corporation For this, my 150th video, here is the return of the intro and top story to the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather from April 28, 1988. Here, the top story (reported by Terence Smith at the White House) is an about-face by President Reagan on the situation involving Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega. For much of the previous month, the White House (as shown in clips from Reagan, Press Secretary Marlin Fitzwater, Elliot Abrams and {the previous day} State Department spokesman Charles Redman) had been calling for Noriega to not only step down but leave the country (in one clip from that day when Reagan was pressed for whether the change meant Noriega could stay in Panama, the President responded with a sheepish "I hope not"). Also included are clips of interviews with New York GOP Senator Al D'Amato and Indiana Democrat Congressman Lee Hamilton. D'Amato had at one point suggested military action to remove Noriega (needless to say, in December 1989 D'Amato got his wish; which I'll elaborate on in the aftermath paragraph). Dan then narrates a brief report on rioting in Panama City, then teases the beginning of a "Stopping the Smugglers" story by Richard Schlesinger (the recording stopped just before Schlesinger began his report). AFTERMATH: As it would turn out, in May 1989, the elections for the next Panamanian president took place only for a Noriega-backed candidate to win under very suspicious circumstances (with former President Jimmy Carter, there ...
